Women of Maine’s Working Waterfront
30 July 2021
Women entrepreneurs are increasingly choosing hardworking careers in aquaculture and turning the tides of an industry historically dominated by men.
In Maine, one-third of Limited Purpose Aquaculture (LPA) license holders are now women, according to the Maine Aquaculture Workforce Development Strategy, jointly released by the Gulf of Maine Research Institute, Maine Aquaculture Association, and FocusMaine.
These women are not only changing the face of the aquaculture workforce in Maine; they are also proving the state has more than lobster to offer consumers. Using innovative approaches and sustainable practices, they are meeting the growing global demand for sea-based products like eels, kelp, oysters, and mussels.
